At a second home in the Texas Hill Country, back when our children were still toddlers and we were still learning how to slow down. We came for the weekends and stayed for the life. John and I were building a business, raising three little ones, and running a little ragged the way young families do. Wimberley was supposed to be an escape hatch — a place to breathe on Saturdays. Instead, it taught us how to come home to each other. Over the years, that weekend place became a family ranch, and the ranch became the center of gravity for our whole family. Cows and horses and goats. Sunsets that stop you where you stand. Grandparents pitching in, cousins running the fields, my mother’s salsa in the fridge. It’s where we homeschool, where we host, where we write. It’s home. ## Why we love it here Wimberley sits in the folds of the Hill Country, about an hour southwest of Austin — close enough to fly in and far enough to feel like another world. The land here is generous: live oaks and limestone, spring-fed creeks, wildflowers that turn the fields blue in April, and a sky at night so dark it’s officially certified for its stars. What the town gave us, more than anything, was permission to slow down. To eat dinner on the porch. To let the kids get muddy. To watch a storm roll in instead of a screen. That’s the thing we most want to share with the people who come stay. ## A little guide to Wimberley When our guests ask what to do, here’s where we send them. Wimberley is small — a square, a creek, and a whole lot of sky — but there’s more magic here than the size lets on. ### Get in the water Blue Hole Regional Park is the heart of a Wimberley summer — a cypress-shaded swimming hole on Cypress Creek, with 126 acres of trails and picnic lawns around it. A little farther out, Jacob’s Well is one of the most beautiful (and otherworldly) natural springs in Texas, bubbling up from an underground cave system. Both are wildly popular in summer, so book ahead — summer swimming at both is reservation-based — book your window ahead in the busy months. ### Come for the first Saturday Wimberley Market Days is one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in Texas — 400-plus vendors of antiques, art, and handmade goods spread under the oaks at Lions Field, with live music and good food. It runs the first Saturday of the month, spring through the holidays. Go early, wear a hat, bring cash. ### Wander the Square The Wimberley Square is made for a slow morning — independent boutiques, galleries, a bookshop, a good cup of coffee, and lunch somewhere with a porch. It’s the kind of place where the shopkeepers remember you. ### Wine, olives & the Salt Lick Fifteen minutes toward Driftwood you’ll find a little cluster of Hill Country classics: Duchman Family Winery and Driftwood Estate Winery for a lazy afternoon on the patio, Bella Vista Ranch for Texas olive oil and a tour of the grove, and The Salt Lick — the legendary open-pit barbecue everyone tells you to try, and they’re right. Book ahead on weekends — the good ones fill up in a small town. ### Coffee & a slow morning Start on the Square at [Sip on the Square](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Sip%20on%20the%20Square%20coffee%20Wimberley%20TX&ref=this-one-life.ghost.io) for a good cup, and if you don’t mind a short drive, [Blanco Brew](https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=Blanco%20Brew%20Blanco%20TX&ref=this-one-life.ghost.io) over in Blanco is worth it for a slow breakfast. ### Get outside Beyond the swimming holes, there’s the Blanco River, quiet country roads made for a drive, hiking and cycling in every direction, and the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens for outdoor shows, the spring butterfly festival, and the Trail of Lights at Christmas. In April, come for the bluebonnets. In July, come for the water.
